Things To Do!

The Bribie Island Region

The Bribie Island area includes Banksia Beach, Bellara, Bongaree, Welsby, White Patch, Woorim, Beachmere, Donnybrook, Meldale, Toorbul, Godwin Beach, Ningi and Sandstone Point.

Perhaps Bribie Island’s biggest asset is the ‘community feel’ it offers residents and visitors. It’s what draws each new generation back to Bribie Island for family holidays and what makes visiting here so worthwhile.

Try some water sports, hire a boat or take a ride!

Want to try jet skiing? Want to self-drive a boat out to do some serious fishing? What about stand up paddling? Hire boats, paddle boards, kayaks, electric bicycles, segways and surry bikes to try something new and see Bribie Island from a whole new perspective. https://boabboats.com.au/bribie-island https://bribiebeachshack.com.au/ https://bbqboathire.com.au/ https://bribieboats.com.au/boathire/

Bongaree with kids

Bongaree is very popular destination for families – whether it’s a day trip or week long holiday!  Experience the calm waters of the beach, watch the fishermen on the jetty, visit Brennan Park (with the world’s most fun flying fox!) and of course, enjoy local fish and chips, followed by ice-cream right on the beach.

It’s a whole day of fun in one amazing spot!

Pumicestone Passage

From its northern mouth opening into the ocean off the Caloundra coastline, to its southern end filtering into Deception Bay – Pumicestone Passage is a 35 kilometre ecological marvel and a waterway wonderland of fun.

Part of the Moreton Bay Marine Park, (home to the oldest registered fish habitat in Queensland) the passage is a narrow, shallow estuary, encompassing a meandering system of channels, sand banks and islands located between South-East Queensland’s mainland and Bribie Island.

The passage is one of Australia’s most important bird and marine habitats on the east coast. Home to more than a plethora of birdlife, as well as populations of dugongs, dolphins, turtles and more species, it is little wonder why this waterway is such a popular shorebird watching area for bird watchers and nature photographers.

Melsa Park Miniature Steam Train Rides

The initials M.E.L.S.A. stand for ‘Model Engineers and Light Steamers Association” and the members of the local club are keen enthusiasts who operate the mini-train rides for the enjoyment of both locals and visitors alike.

The mini-trains are normally built by members and are either steam or electrically driven. The little trains have been running around the Bribie Island track since April 1st in 1985 and the club members really love to see how happy the kids are as they go for a ride on the train.

These mini-train rides on the third Sunday of each month are always a popular attraction and operate from approximately 10 am until early afternoon at MELSA Park on Toorbul Street in Bongaree.

Cultural Heritage

The indigenous “Joondoburrie” people of Bribie Island enjoyed a rich seasonal diet of plants, animals, and seafood that included kangaroo, possum, goanna, snakes and birds as well as oysters, prawns, crabs and fish throughout the year.

It was indeed an island of plenty that may have supported several hundred people in various seasonal camps around the island and the Passage. With the coming of white man it took less than 100 years for these proud and traditional people to be wiped out. By the 1870’s when pioneer settlers moved into this area, the Indigenous people around the Bay area were eventually reduced to a disparate group of less than 50 people.
